Guidance for Large Communities
Large communities may have a larger budget for recycling and waste reduction communication. Larger metropolitan communities may benefit from in-house communications resources, like in-house graphic design, a videographer, and a media specialist. This toolkit can bring them up to speed on best practices for images, language, and strategy for recycling and waste reduction communications.
Some best practices for large communities' consideration include:
- Create a communications budget to include targeted recycling campaigns by collection routes.
- Check any hauling contracts to ensure there is a plan for recycling, compost and waste reduction education.
- More diverse communities have the advantage of multicultural events to educate on recycling and waste reduction. Research these opportunities and find community partnerships for education.
- Annual drop-off events for household chemicals and electronics help keep these materials out of the waste stream and are great ways to talk to residents.
- Shredded paper events are popular and bring communities together.
