ORGANICS MANAGEMENT
Food Scraps & Composting Programs
Organic material makes up about 37% of the waste stream and is handled and processed very differently than inorganic recyclable material.
Fortunately, there are options for keeping this valuable material out of landfills. From curbside service to drop-off programs to home composting, this section of the toolkit is intended to help you either start or improve your community's organics recycling options. Organics are often seen as a "low hanging fruit" (pun intended) for waste diversion, because it's such a large percentage of the waste stream.
Unlike inorganic recyclables that have to be sorted and separated, when organic materials are recycled, they have to be mixed together to create an environment for microbes to do the work of turning those materials into a healthy soil amendment. But like any waste, not creating it in the first place is always a good option.
